The “real” truth behind buffered acids

Feb252018

Being in this industry as long as I have I constantly get asked by my clients about the “latest and greatest” products on the market. I am seeing more companies come out with these buffered acids (urea hydrochloride). I obviously help them understand the product and educate them on areas on the SDS sheets which tell the real truth about a product.  Recently a client asked me about this product a competitor presented to him saying it’s as safe as Synpro’s products and carries a “true” HMIS of 1-0-0. He was alluding to the fact that because all of our products carry a triple zero HMIS score that it is basically water.  Everyone knows you can not patent water and all of our products are patented by the US Patent Office, not from some independent lab in Georgia.

His SDS did say it was a 1-0-0 HMIS, but when you look at box 3 it says it contains 25-50% mineral acid salt of organic Amide ( I guess depending on how they feel that day depends on how much mineral acid you will receive).  When the acid is activated, it becomes an EXTREMELY dangerous product.

This product is a buffered acid, a urea hydrochloride. That’s the whole point of a buffered acid like this.  Technically the urea transforms the acid into a salt.  Once you hydrate then it becomes even more aggressive than the original acid so in reality when you’re using this product it would be the same as using HCl which in a 31% mineral acid salt content with the HMIS of 3-0-1.   Also, the way this company was able to get their HMIS down to 1-0-0 is they watered it down.  Every other buffered acid/urea hydrochloride product on the market all carry a 3-0-1 HMIS.

Some facts about buffered acids:

·   Buffered acids mask hydrochloric acid with urea (nitrogen).

·   When inhibited, acid is chemically referred to as  an “organic salt”

·   Can NOT add water or you hydrate the acids making them  highly corrosive

As I’ve written many times, all of Synpro’s products carry a triple zero HMIS meaning they are completely safe for your equipment, your employees, and the environment which we have an amazing relationship with both the EPA and OSHA.

Feel free to contact me anytime if you have questions about any product you are currently using or have been presented as the latest and greatest product.  Obviously product labels are not going to announce they are a buffered acid.  Synpro has the only patented products and although other companies have tried, they are nowhere close to being as effective as ours.
